Chapter Twenty-Two

Luke strolled into the Law Offices of Jenkins & Associates with renewed energy. It was always a good day when he won a case. Throughout the trial, he had poked holes in the prosecution’s case and felt confident that he could win. But he hadn’t been positive until the jury spoke those two magic words—not guilty.

It’s been a good week, he thought.

A few days ago, he and Christina learned that the seller accepted their offer on the house and agreed to a quick closing. Luke had hoped to be in the place before the baby was born, but they were cutting it close. At least they had finally found a home and could scratch that off their list of things to do.

Now, if he could get through the rest of the day without thinking about how Christina was traveling alone, he might be able to maintain his sanity. She was at the airport, and he was trying not to text her…again. It gave him a little peace, knowing that she and Peyton should arrive in Atlanta around the same time. Knowing her sister would be there made him feel a lot better, and it would give Christina a day and a half to hang with her.

After greeting his assistant, Luke entered his office, flipped on the lights, and rounded his desk. He dropped down into his seat and released a long sigh of relief. Instead of addressing the messages on his desk, he took a moment to lay his head back and closed his eyes. Not even a minute had passed before his cell phone vibrated in his pocket.

So much for taking a break.

He opened his eyes, pulled out the device, and glanced at the screen.

Michael: Call me when you can.

There were a few people in Luke’s life who he always made time for, and Michael Cutter was one of them. But this text was a bit ominous. Rarely did his friend send messages without including some details.

Curious, Luke called him, and Michael picked up on the first ring.

“What’s up, man?” his friend said. There was rustling in the background, and it sounded like Mike was moving around, then Luke heard a door close. “I wasn’t expecting to hear from you so quickly. I assumed you’d still be in court.”

“Nope. I just returned to my office,” Luke said as he skimmed a document that his assistant had left in a folder on his desk. “What’s going on? I don’t usually hear from you in the middle of the day.”

“Randolph Cray is out of prison,” Michael said without preamble, and shock blasted through Luke.

“What?” he croaked out, unable to say more than that. He dropped the stack of papers and slammed back against his seat.

“I just found out and figured I’d let you know in case you hadn’t heard,” Michael explained.

Running a shaky hand over his mouth and down his chin, Luke’s brain raced as memories of Randolph flooded his mind. The gangster, also known as Lefty, used to be an enforcer for the L’Arco crime family out of New York.
